I wish we could show your jig on air. You wish we could show your sweatshirt on air. I also wish you guys could see what we're about to drink. It's gonna be delicious. Laughing on our little break there. We are fresh off of our pop-up pub. Yeah, I think I'm still asleep. My favorite part of the pop-up pub was the cacon cacophony of comments starting from my wife who saw it blow up. Oh, it really is a pop-up pub.
SPEAKER_01Yes, literally, I cannot tell you how many people were like, oh, you meant it was a pop-up pub. I'm like, uh-huh. Because it was a giant inflatable pub. Yeah, so a lot of people thought it was a bounce house and then told me they were disappointed it wasn't a bounce house. Uh so you know.
SPEAKER_00Lucy, Simona, all the children. I think Elliot tried to make it a bounce house.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, at the end. He did a good job. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Your dad was not a great influence in the in the making it not a bounce house.
SPEAKER_01He was like the tickle monster. It was really cool to see though.
SPEAKER_00Uh, because And then he was definitely bouncing in the not bounce house.
SPEAKER_01The the edges, like you could sit on it, and so the kids thought, oh, we'll sit on it and bounce, which like to be fair, I think I would have done the same.
SPEAKER_00Maybe it's like a bounce house pub combo, and we just didn't know. Maybe we should have part of it be about you know, like how the ones that have the ball pit, and then like it's a slide. The ball pit portion could be the pub portion and the slide portion could be the bounce house portion.
SPEAKER_01Actually, someone told me that one of the bigger ones that this company rents has that. Like it has some kind of kid portion in it. Oh, yes, we need that. Um, also, last comment on this, not the last comment. Did you see the Instagram message that someone said we should build a permanent one?
SPEAKER_00Yes.
SPEAKER_01I agree.
SPEAKER_00Well, one of the things, so we had a variety of beers and not beer, cider, for instance. Um, and we had a lot of people uh ask for half and halves, or as you might incorrectly know them, black and tanse, that's racist. Well, it was my fault because I said I need one.
SPEAKER_01We must have this on the microphone.
SPEAKER_00I forgot the spoon. I need to go get a spoon. One second, be right back. I'm back. Did you miss me? I missed you.
SPEAKER_01And watching you put your headphones on was fun.
SPEAKER_00So um I have tips now on if you want to make a half and half. You're not supposed to call it black and tan because the black and tans were sell out policemen that committed atrocities on the Irish people. Well, sorry, that's what I called it. So anyway, um didn't mean to offend anyone. I have tips. So if you're not aware, a half and half is a beer pour, that is half a lighter beer, typically a harp, and uh half a darker beer, typically a Guinness. And it kind of sits on top. It's beautiful. We made some yesterday using Guinness Baltimore Blonde.
SPEAKER_01Which was not the plan. We would have used harp had we gotten to it.
SPEAKER_00It's been out of stock because of I think everybody understands why a beer coming from Ireland has been out of stock for uh five weeks. Um, anyway, uh so the Baltimore blonde is an ale. Oh, is that what it is? Which is uh stouts are also technically an ale. They brewed in the ale process. Oh and so they kind of combined a little fast.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and it wasn't as light.
SPEAKER_00So here's my first tip don't use a full-size glass because your lagers, which is my second tip, your light beer is gonna come in a 12-ounce can usually, and your stout is coming in a 15-ounce can.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00So it's not gonna perfectly line up. And if you're trying to fill a 16-ounce pint glass, you're not gonna have enough beer. I hear you. Because you're gonna make two, right? Because you're opening two beers. Yeah, so you're gonna make two of these. So we're gonna do this in Gennas Glasses because why not? Um would you like the two-can glass or the turtle glass? The turtle. All right, you get the turtle glass. So my first tip is use a like 12-ounce glass.
SPEAKER_01Sorry, looking at the glass. Very good.
SPEAKER_00My second tip is for your light beer, use a lager. We're gonna use Sype Extra Pale Pilsner. Yes, because we love it. My third tip is have it ice cold because Bridget likes her beer ice cold. Nick was feverishly making sure the beer was ice cold before this episode. And then my next tip is have the beers open for a while. If they're super carbonated, like when you just open them, it makes it a lot harder to get it to sit right because there's foam that screws up with stuff. So if you let it open and sit for a while before you do that, they're gonna be less carbonated and easier to do.
SPEAKER_01I have a question based on what you taught me yesterday. These Guinness pub cans are supposed to be poured like directly upside down, right? Is that how you do it for the black and tan or half?
SPEAKER_00For the black and tan, half and half. We're gonna do it a little differently. So our first pour. There's some schmuckus from my dishwasher on this one. Schmuckus! Um, we're gonna do like our typical kind of pour down the side of the glass for our lager, our site. We're gonna let that sit. The head's gonna subside a little bit. Okay. Now you take your spoon and put it upside down so it's a concave surface. Oh, go on. I read this in the thing. And um, you're gonna take. Why is my foam not going away and yours is? Because mine was the first four. You're gonna take.
SPEAKER_01Oh, mine what? You poured mine first. Oh, yeah, I guess right.
SPEAKER_00Yours was the first four, so it's uh you're gonna take, we'll let that subside a little bit more. Your spoon, put it over the lager, okay, and pour the beer, the stout onto it. What does the spoon do? It disperses it and gets rid of some of the nitro nitrogenation of the guinness.
SPEAKER_01Which is what you actually want out of the guinness, right? Correct.
SPEAKER_00Great. And helps it sit in. It's really focused right now. Oops, I dribbled a little bit.
SPEAKER_01Oh we usually have a paper towel. Oh no. I have a sleeve. And then it sits on top. Such a boy thing. It's so beautiful. I was going through old St. Patrick's Day memories on my phone and saw a picture of a half and half beer that I had had years ago, and that's what made me be like, heck, we need to sell these at the beer at the pop-up pub. And then we didn't practice.
SPEAKER_00But they were still delicious. They were very good. And it would have, I mean, we would have been SOL because, you know. Anyway. There you go.
SPEAKER_01Look at that. Okay, guys. Did you so I think Slantra? Oh, Slantra! This will come out on Sunday when maybe you've all celebrated a lot of St. Patrick's Day by then.
SPEAKER_00Little roasty, a little light. So good. Very delicious.
SPEAKER_01We went through this like St. Patrick's Day is Thursday. Are people celebrating the weekend before or the weekend after?
SPEAKER_00We're celebrating.
SPEAKER_01And it seems like everyone's celebrating people are celebrating both weekends. And also on Thursday, because holy cow, the turnout for our pop-up pub was gonna work.
SPEAKER_00Thank you to everybody who came. Um and we ex we were uh nervously slash excitedly texting back and forth in the morning. And I just I ended with uh because we were both doing little dances and listening to some Irish pub music and stuff. We may have done a jig. Uh and I was like, and also F anybody who can't be happy today. It's St. Patrick's Day. Screw you if you can't, you know, have this day of all days to be like, you know what? I'm gonna cut out work a little early. I'm gonna go have a Guinness, even if I don't like a Guinness, I'm gonna eat some corned beef as a salad American or some lamb stew trying to be authentic. And you know what? It's just a day to celebrate like the Irish happiness of the world. And it was cold, it got cold and cloudy, and people still came out. So thanks. Uh and it was like perfect Dour Irishman weather. It was, it was very Irish feeling. Our our uh your brother-in-law, Michael, yeah, uh, had a tough day. Yeah. Uh we're thinking of you, Michael, but uh, he's a very Irish type of person. McCarthy. Um Michael McCarthy. And uh, you know, he had his like sweater thing on and his hat on, and he's got the little kind of curly hair going on. He looks like an Irish man.
SPEAKER_01My dad feels with with what my dad had on yesterday, same thing. Gallagher.
SPEAKER_00They just stood there in the field holding a beer, like gray sky. This is Ireland. Yeah, and it's like this is very like if you can't do that on St. Patrick's Day, you're a miserable human being and we don't want you in our lives.
SPEAKER_01So thank you. I did spend a St. Patrick's Day in Ireland, and it was that worse than that weather. It was actually kind of like sleeting on us. So yesterday was beautiful. Um, all right, so delicious half and half.
SPEAKER_00Um, you could also get snake, we did snake bites, which are half cider and half.
SPEAKER_01Yes, but your sister told me that black currant, you're supposed to like top it with black currant liqueur or liquor. Oh, interesting.
SPEAKER_00Well, we didn't have that.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and I said, Oh, we can't serve that. So, but someone, I think Shannon had a cider and a Guinness. I've never heard of that.
SPEAKER_00You could also do Smittics, people do that, and that just gets like uh very Irish feeling.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_01Um, hey, so daylight savings.
SPEAKER_00Oh, it's the worst.
SPEAKER_01I'm just gonna keep talking about this because it's been the worst week. With I like normally we are we are the people that just take daylight savings and we don't treat it like we don't change the kid's schedule. We just kind of keep things normal and it all kind of works itself out. But this one is hitting our house like a load of bricks. Like Elliot's still waking up at 5 30 a.m. Like nothing ever happened, but he's like off. He's just acting a crazy. Um, Lucy went to bed at 5 30 p.m. and slept until 6 30 a.m. And still she's doing the same. We have to wake her up almost every morning by seven so she can like get out the door, which like that's great. Me and Tyler, excuse me, me and Tyler cannot like get caught up on sleep. Both of us are just like dying tired. I I and we're getting the normal amount of sleep that we've always gotten.
SPEAKER_00So F you daylight saving. We're in the same boat. Simona's been like weird. She's like sleeping her normal hours and like everything. We managed to transition well, but she's been like just a little weird and a little off and a little more clingy than usual, and very not into data. Just BS.
SPEAKER_01Lucy, also very clingy.
SPEAKER_00And um, Sarah and I cannot get caught up in sleep. We're both waking up every morning, like, what time is it? Yes. Why is it so bright out at no? It's so dark out. Because we're waking up late and we're like, oh crap. Oh god, how late are you waking up? Like 6 30. It is still dark at 6 30. Kind of being light, so it's um you know, it's very confusing. Yeah, it's the worst.
SPEAKER_01Although I don't know how I feel about making it go away because Yeah, the Senate's changing this, supposedly.
SPEAKER_00Or they have changed. They've passed a thing. I think it should be the winter stuff all the time.
SPEAKER_01Because who was it you that was telling me it would be in the winter, it won't get light till 8 a.m.?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, no, it's even later than that.
SPEAKER_01Okay. Yeah, it's like I would much rather it get darker earlier.
SPEAKER_00Yes. The real time is not daylight saving stuff. It should be the real time. Like, this is what humanity's cicadian rhythm is based on. Like, we're screwing, like, there's so much good research now about how important cicadian rhythm is, how like attuned to the earth's natural weirdo flow fest shaman thing now. But um, like there's a lot of research now about like, hey, the circadian rhythm is a real thing, and it's actually attuned to like all like the you know, the lunar tides, like it's actually tied to these things. We all move circle of life stuff. Oh boy. We're screwing with it. So anyway.
SPEAKER_01Well, no one gets that much sleep. Well, not no one, not me. No one in my life gets that much sleep.
SPEAKER_00Anyway, daylight savings. A tune yourself to your circadian rhythm a little bit more.
SPEAKER_01I don't have time for that. My work life balance doesn't allow for that. Just kidding, my children's life balance. Um, how was the rest of your week that's at St. Patty's? It was warm this weekend. Was it? Yeah, it was like 60. Oh, this past weekend. Yeah, yeah. A week ago for when you're listening.
SPEAKER_00It was great. So we why can't I remember last weekend? We were able to get outside and play on this playset. We I lit a fire. Oh, yeah, it was nice during the week. That's true. So we had like a fire going on our back patio for like six hours in a little fire pit. Nice. We as a family uh cracked some beers. Um I had a beer? She, you know, no comment. It is Wisconsin, it is legal. Uh, tried to get Will Payne a beer. Oh, yeah, that was funny. That was a good effort. Uh good effort. Uh he's never had one before, I'm sure. And um we uh uh we I I was at Piggly Wiggly and I saw a four-pack of rolling rock pint cans. Oh my god, rolling rock, I forgot about it. I know, and I was like, oh, I haven't had this forever. It sounds good. So we demolished those because it was like the perfect beer for like the weather. Demolished it. Uh we played on the swing set, so I had so much fun. We had the fire, we'd go warm up, we threw some more logs on there. I got these new gloves. My uncle is a retired firefighter, and so he's getting rid of some of his gear, and he has these gloves that you can like grab burning pallets. Oh, and so I tested those out. Oh, yeah. I was like, this is great. Uh so we we uh grilled some stuff for the first time in a while. We did cheeseburgers, and it was just like lovely to have grilled food, be outside. We moved to the country so we could be outside all afternoon and have fires and you know, things like this. Can you not do that in the city?
SPEAKER_01I can be outside if I want. It's you know, a little different. You can also have a fire, it's just like it has to be.
SPEAKER_00You're not really in the city, you're in a township. Well, sure, you're right. You're in the burbs. I'm just one street away from the city. You're in the burbs at our condo. We couldn't do it, for instance.
SPEAKER_01Oh, heard, yes. Okay.
SPEAKER_00So uh it was just great. It was like, oh, Sarah and I both looked at each other and we're like, oh yeah, this is why we moved here.
SPEAKER_01Oh, that's so nice.
SPEAKER_00This is why we built this house. Like, yeah, this is why we did this.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, we're like, oh, it's so nice. I forgot that it was nice out just a mere three days ago.
SPEAKER_00It was also, you know, you forget how much fresh air just destroys children, like ability to beautiful where it's like 6 30, and you're like, hey, Simone, you gotta stay up for a little bit while longer, sweetheart. Oh, we don't have that problem. I'm tired. Well, she ran outside. She like literally ran outside for four hours.
SPEAKER_01No, uh, we just let them go to bed. Well, she would have woke up at five. Well, see, we have found that our kids, it does not matter. Our like, uh you can all come at me about it, but I have put Elliot to bed at 10 p.m. sometimes because we're crazy, or 6:30, and he wakes up at 5 30. Doesn't matter.
SPEAKER_00So that's my parenting tip. Can we talk about Elliot, the great cashier?
SPEAKER_01Because it's not in either one of our I debated doing it for Kid Quarter because really what I love more than him being a cashier was his extreme desire to be a bar back. See, like I had to run and get some more beer from the cooler. Elliot wanted to come with. I was like, honey, you don't have to come in here. There's hanging cows in this cooler. And he was, yeah, steers. He's like, I'm not going to. And then he peeked around the window or the door and he goes, that was cool. And then insisted on carrying the Guinness. He's like, I want to take it to North.
SPEAKER_00Oh my gosh. He did a great job carrying the eight very heavy pint cans of Guinness. It was very funny. Shannon got an all-timer picture that should be his profile picture on St. Patrick's Day. Like when he's, you know, got uh TikTok or whatever.
SPEAKER_01Whatever social media exists when he's old enough.
SPEAKER_00You know, every St. Patrick's Day, he needs to change it to this picture of him when he's seven, hauling cans of Guinness looking like he's only six. He's only six. Just turned six. Man, he looks like he's nine. Easily. Uh, he should have this picture of him bar backing. Like he looks like a hot mess, too.
SPEAKER_01I have a picture of him, and yeah, his hair, like while he's carrying it. Shannon's are way better, but and yeah, his hair's like flow. He looks like a frat boy.
SPEAKER_00Yep. I mean it's he that's the like that's gonna get him laid.
SPEAKER_01Our cousin Ruby has a really awesome picture. Elliot was maybe like three, and it was a summer family party, like outdoors. So Elliot's all sweaty, and he's got like a Patagonia hat on and some funny shirt. And Ruby has this picture with him where he somehow looks like a 20-year-old Chris Farley, and it is like my favorite picture. Every year she sends it to me, like when it comes up in her reminders. Yeah, that's so funny. So, anyway, that was that's Elliot's photos.
SPEAKER_00Um, Ralph Loren, I saw this. Okay, it's controversial.
SPEAKER_01Did you see the article? Well, okay, so is this the HBCU line from Ralph Loren? Yeah, so Ralph Loren, first of all, are they still relevant? Like, I I mean all I ever talk about them with the Olympics. Olympics, all I ever know is that they do the Olympic year. And I'm like, how do you sell money to do this?
SPEAKER_00I I always wonder, like, I had a Ralph Loren, like the whole like long sleeve polo thing with the pony and everything, like seventh grade, and thought I was so cool. Shannon used to always wear the geometric patterns and then uh and then like in ninth grade, I'm like, this is a douche shirt that looks horrible. Makes you look fat. It makes you like look it's kind of a douche brand, but yes, but like who wears them?
SPEAKER_01So it's known, obviously, is very preppy. So I think that it's maybe just like not in our price range of regular everyday clothing. Is that you know what though?
SPEAKER_00Like I could see in the price range of Patagonia. Yeah, I was gonna say, yeah. And I would rather wear Patagonia because let me tell you the great things. It lasts forever. They replace it, it's good for the environment, it's comfortable, it's warm, but not too warm, and uh it makes you look good.
SPEAKER_01Hey, you're not wearing Patagonia today.
SPEAKER_00I know, because I I need a lighter, better sweater. Uh, I'm going into a basement, so I need something that's um a little warm but not too warm.
SPEAKER_01So I think I'm wearing my finest crew neck.
SPEAKER_00One of my Nike running things that's more of a like, you know, 45 degree running outside type of shirt. Very good. Because when you're not running and it's when you're not one running but wearing workout gear. It's like 65 in the basement, so you know.
SPEAKER_01So the there's a million articles about this, but Ralph Loren has been known to like portray the American dream. So in 2020, it got ripped apart being like, hey, um, everyone's American dream is a very important thing. So rich you could wear clothes that indicate you. Right horseback and you don't even care. Yeah, like are you just saying that like most of the American people play polo? Because I don't think that's true. Um, so they've you know, they've launched a collection inspired by the country's historical black colleges, um, historically black colleges. So they worked with Morehouse and Spelman and then um, you know, quote, uh, working on clothing that um sorry, I shouldn't have started the quote yet. It says the range of autowear, knitwear, suits, and dresses was based on the quote, rich heritage and esteemed traditions of both schools. And the line is beautiful. Like I I think the clothing is beautiful. You don't like it?
SPEAKER_00I think the pictures they have promoting it are ridiculous.
SPEAKER_01This is extremely on brand.
SPEAKER_00It's like tokenism.
SPEAKER_01These black people decided to be a part of it. Yeah, for the paycheck. I I think I like the clothing. Um, it's not I'm not the target audience, I don't think. Um, but they also have the white attire, so which is important in in a culture that I am not a part of, so I don't want to speak about it and be wrong. Um, but they have silk wrap dresses, all kinds of different, you know, the blazers, it still sticks. What I like about it is like you're doing what you're supposed to because you're a big company and like you screwed up, quite frankly. So at least you're trying. Um, but it's still very Ralph Lorent. It's still very preppy. It's still probably priced in a way that uh the majority of people cannot afford it. All people, um, and you know, the top 1%. And I'm not like it's not crazy or anybody with a credit card. It's Patagonia pricing. Yeah, it's not insane, it's just not everyday wear. Like, I'm not just buying this sweater to like wear while I'm recording a podcast. So I don't know. I thought it was interesting. I I it's very interesting. Struggle with this because like I, you know, marketing in PR is what I went to school for. And so, like, this is the right move, PR wise. But it's also not their brand. So well, it is their brand. This is very on brand for them. But like they're saying we were short-sighted in our brand. This this is very Ralph. Anyone that looks at this knows that's a Ralph.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, but it's like they're doing it to be like, okay, we'll include you too. Like it's just like they're doing it to do it.
SPEAKER_01What if they're doing it to say we were wrong? I just have a I don't know. It feels like this is exactly what I find interesting about it. Oh, I don't know. I didn't feel that way. I don't know. I felt like, yeah, you got a bunch of shit because you were wrong and you were a very, very white, prestigious company.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, so like why not like instead of so is the answer to like, oh, we only used white models, to they say, like, oh, we're gonna make a line of clothes for black people and use black people models for that, and our other one we're gonna have white people and white people models and that, or is the thing of like, yeah, this is what we do, and it doesn't matter if you're white or black, you can wear it, and we should reflect that in our advertising and include people of all different colors, not just because they're they included they vowed to use um more than 20% of diverse models in their lines and that's advertising. Because it should be half, right? I mean because we're forgetting brown people, Asians and Hispanics.
SPEAKER_01Well, this is just saying 20% black models. I don't this article is not about if they're using any Asian people.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, so that's where I'm like, you know, so like why don't you just include keep doing what you do, which is your brand, but then make it like clear it doesn't, it's not just a white person thing. It's you know, that's I don't know.
SPEAKER_01I think I respect that they're doing that because like they are a white person brand. So now they're trying to branch out. This whole team, the whole team that created this line was African American. So those people are choosing to be a part of this campaign. They are those African American people of color are saying we agree with what you're doing, whether it's for a paycheck or not, they're choosing to do it.
SPEAKER_00We'll do it for a paycheck.
SPEAKER_01Nothing wrong with that. I don't know. So creative directors, models, cinematographer, all of it. Um, and then of course the colleges, like we said. So I I think it's interesting. I think it's very interesting. I don't think like it's obviously a PR thing, but like they're doing more than other companies who are doing nothing. They just got shit for it in their course correcting, where other companies are like, we'll just fly under the radar and no one will notice that we're shitty. So I'm kind of like, cool, yeah, you fucked up, and so now fix it. And they're trying.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I would fix it differently. I think this is an interesting approach. I think it's cool. Okay, Nick.
SPEAKER_01I think it's cool. I mean, it's interesting. I would have fixed it differently. Just throwing black people into their white clothing and mixing them into their ad campaign, I think, would have felt way worse. What do you guys think? Nick and I are never gonna agree on this. Okay.
SPEAKER_00I have a news story from Reddit that made me laugh from the subreddit, not the onion. The headline is Middle Eastern oil producers worried more people will buy electric cars as a result of high oil prices, to which they say, no shit, you dumbasses. Good. Uh anyway, Iraq is part of OPEC now. And uh, one of the ways we're gonna help uh get ourselves off of Russian energy, because you know, uh there. Bad now is we're gonna have Iraq oil. Oh good. Oh how the tables have tabled. Uh all how the turns have tabled, as they say in the office. Um, so the they're bringing on more oil capacity because let's be clear, there's a still actually a ton of oil that we ration to keep prices high, you know, in a good oligopoly way of doing things. And uh they are now straddling a line where, oh, we've cut production so much that people are buying electric cars to never have to buy gasoline again. That's bad for us. So I think it's hilarious that these oil countries are now like, what is that middle point?
SPEAKER_01Maybe we can't charge five and a half dollars a gallon for gas.
SPEAKER_00I find it hilarious.
SPEAKER_01It is like how much do you think gas is gonna end up costing?
SPEAKER_00Well, the price of oil has been falling.
SPEAKER_01Yes. And but people are the it's supply and demand, right? And people are still buying it.
SPEAKER_00It's just the stupid gas companies. We're in late stage capitalism where you just charge as much to the pain point as possible.
SPEAKER_01Right.
SPEAKER_00And now people are buying electric cars.
SPEAKER_01I I think it's I've thought about this and I'm like, uh, I haven't I've thought more about where I'm driving. Like I go to Milwaukee once a week and I'm like, oh, maybe I shouldn't, but I'm still driving an SUV because it's more convenient for my family.
SPEAKER_00So our friend Tyler, not your husband Tyler, who sells beer, uh salesman, drives around all over. He bought a Tesla.
SPEAKER_01He did doesn't his company pay for his gas? Did they change their policies?
SPEAKER_00Well, yeah, he'll still get the mileage reimbursement, so he'll just be banking it. He bought a Tesla.
SPEAKER_01Okay, that that but like he'll be so far ahead. That's prestigious.
SPEAKER_00So I mean, you know, it's uh $47,000 plus the $7,000 tax rebate.
SPEAKER_01$47,000 is how much Teslas are?
SPEAKER_00That's how much they are. And then you get a $7,000 rebate, which is like totally baked in the price.
SPEAKER_01I'll just pay for my gas. You have no gas bill. I'm saying with my current vehicle that did not cost me $47,000.
SPEAKER_00But you know, if you were still getting the mileage reimbursement that includes gas, you're gonna great move, Tyler. So uh a lot of people that drive a lot are thinking about this. I think it's hilarious. Uh, I had another article. It was about uh Tesla, Tesla owner that got arrested. It was for battery.
SPEAKER_01Uh-oh. It was like he got arrested? Uh oh, dad joke. Uh we'll be right back, friends. All right, guys, we're back. We're back! And I'm here with a PSA. Easter is coming. Just to start thinking about what you're putting in, your kids, your significant other, your friends. Hey, maybe give your parents an Easter basket. I don't know. We love Easter at our house. Elliot has declared it his favorite holiday. Um, but I want to-cause he's a good Christian boy, loves Jesus coming back. Yes, that is why. Um, not because he has eggs filled with candy and money and a basket filled with yeah, not that. Um, so I found an adorable thing on Etsy. We love Etsy, we love a good small business, and they have custom children's sunglasses. And I'm very much, admittedly, one that's like, I can make this on my own. But honestly, at this price, by the time I bought this stuff and by the time I did it myself, it would be $13, which is how much these glasses are. And they are adorable, like round sunglasses. They have like little flower-shaped ones, and they have like a little daisy or whatever customization you want, and then a name. So, like little, I can just see Lucy rocking these. So, I'm gonna order a pair to put in her.
SPEAKER_00You're gonna put Lucy or Lucille.
SPEAKER_01These seem like Lucille. I love Lucille. Like, I want I want her to be Lucille, but that's so pretentious. She can wear Ralph Fillorette in HBCU stuff. No, that would be wrong. I no. So, anyway, I'm sharing the link. Um, it'll be in the show notes, and these are adorable. There's like a million options of colors and names and little flowers and whatever, but order them now so you get them in time for Easter.
SPEAKER_00Um, I also want to share another thing you shared in a different place. Uh, the Easter craft thing you had. Oh, yeah. There's some bunny ears made out of different uh pipe cleaners. Yeah, there was a really cool tip.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and I saw that somewhere else from another um a blogger, Jenny Sipoletti, that I love. She it's just like a headband of pipe cleaners and a couple other pipe cleaners. It was really cool. So cute. And I know everyone with young children likes to spend time crafting with them, so there you go.
SPEAKER_00Um, I am not giving product recommendations, but I'm asking for them. I love this. Um, so uh in addition to wanting an electric vehicle myself for environmental reasons, uh, we use a we drink a lot of um bubbly in our house. Booblay. Uh it's our favorite. Um as we might have ousted it. We found a new brand. Ooh, did you? Okay, go on, sorry. Uh we throw out all the cans, recycle them, but we're like, man, this is still a lot of waste. And so we're like, maybe we get the soda stream that's the booblay version of it. But you have to make a huge batch and we're not sure. So if anybody has a soda stream and uses it with the bubbly, yeah, let me know how it works for you. I'd love to hear that. Also, I got an email. I had a Fitbic Ionic that I used for things when I got paid to use it. I'm more of a um analog watch person, in all honesty. I do just like having my watch be my watch. It works really well for me that way. I've worn a watch every day since I was in sixth grade. Wow. Um, and most days since like third grade. I've just always liked I feel weird without one. I feel weird without my Apple Watch. Um, you know, for a while I double fist or double fisted. Double fisted. I double, I was doing this motion and I have beer in front of me, so I thought double fisted. Uh I double wristed uh You did? Yeah, well, because I needed to for the health insurance to save you know all the money.
SPEAKER_01Can't you see the time on your Fitbit?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, but I don't like doing that. I I it's I don't like that. Okay. So anyway, they're recalling it because it burns people's wrists. So I'm gonna get 300 bucks on Fitbit for this thing.
SPEAKER_01Is that how much it costs?
SPEAKER_00I thought Fitbits were like 100. Well, there's like the little ones, but I have the like the actual smartwatch one. So anyway, I'm thinking I might just go and buy myself an Apple Watch out of the deal because I like to do with it. Uh I like that they track your like if you're walking correctly. I mean, I love my Apple Watch. All of these things. So if you have, you know, a Garmin, if you have a Fitbit, the newer watch versions, not Apple, let me know which ones you like.
SPEAKER_01No, you're just gonna get people yelling at you about brands. You like Apple because all your shit is Apple. I mean, you're probably telling you right now. Also, I have a note on SodaStream. Britney, if you are listening, send us. Actually, I'll just share the tips because I know the tips. Brittany and Dennis had a SodaStream for a while. Okay, we'll share the tips.
SPEAKER_00I gave you black and tan tips. I'm sorry, half and half. You give me SodaStream and fitness tracker watches. We'll be back.
SPEAKER_02We're back.
SPEAKER_00And I've been looking forward to this since I came up with this segment idea an hour and a half ago. Briefly a few moments ago. It's called Sconson or Not. Sconson or not. So we have um a list of six uh six categories of uh where it's a you have to pick which of these actors is from Sconson.
SPEAKER_01Oh, I'm very bad at this.
SPEAKER_00So uh there's some interesting Sconson ties. We are Sconsin, we love Sconson, and you know, we're happy to tell everybody, you know, actually, that person's from Sconsin'.
SPEAKER_01I can only think of one person, I don't even know his name. I think I know the show he was in.
SPEAKER_00Um this first one, you're gonna know because you have a personal connection with this. I'm giving you a softball and you're gonna laugh and you can do all this. This one comes from the Bachelor Universe. Oh contestant on both The Bachelorette and The Bachelor, Ari Lewendike Jr., race car driver extraordinaire, or Nick VL. Nick VL who showed up on The Bachelor, everybody's like, Oh my god, Nick, are you? Is Nick from Wisconsin? Nick V from Wisconsin. My friends were all like, Are you on the bachelor?
SPEAKER_01Oh, that's funny. I was like, what do you mean? Nick V has been in my apartment, so it's Nick V.
SPEAKER_00Bridget knows. Nick V. Nick VL, a bachelor franchise veteran.
SPEAKER_01I've played volleyball against him.
SPEAKER_00Went to Waukesha North High School and the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, and is a close personal friend of Bridget.
SPEAKER_01Uh something like that, yeah. No, and it's not me, if you're thinking I had any relations with him. No, but Nick V from Wisconsin.
SPEAKER_00All right. Willy Wonka's. Willy Wonka? Johnny Depp or Gene Wilder. Which Willy Wonka is from Wisconsin? Gene Wilder. Ding, ding, ding, ding, ding. Correct. Johnny Depp's. Gene Wilder was born on Milwaukee's fashionable west side in 1933. Fashionable West side? In 1933, it was fashionable. It was new in 1933. Now it's just crap. New in here. He went to Washington High School before making it to Broadway in the big screen. He started drama at the University of Iowa, served in the Army, then studied at the Actors Studio in New York City. Wow. Iowa to New York City. There is a connection with Johnny Depp. He did film Public Enemies in Columbus, Wisconsin, which is where my mom was born. Oh, really? Yeah, they were living there at the time. My grandfather was a uh butcher shore butcher store, no, not a butcher, a grocery store butcher in Columbus at a uh Century at the time.
SPEAKER_01I don't even know where Columbus is.
SPEAKER_00It's a little southwest of Matt or southeast of Madison.
SPEAKER_01Oh, wow. Okay. So you know. I remember filming that movie because it was like when all the tax credits were coming out.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Yeah. Anyway. Next you're two for two, Kaylin and Bridge. It's gonna get harder, I feel. Uh next category, Saturday Night Live. Ooh. Dan Aykroyd or Chris Farley. Feels like Dan Aykroyd. We talked about Chris Farley.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, we sure did, but it feels like Dan Aykroyd.
SPEAKER_00He's Canadian. It's actually Chris Farley. Really? Chris Farley, comedian and actor, was a Madison native, because he's dead, and a Marquette University graduate. Oh, I knew that. After working at Second City in Chicago, he joined SNL in 1990. People are gonna be mad at me about this. Dan Aykroyd did Blues Brothers in Chicago, so it does make sense. He's a Sconsin-seeming guy. Oh, I do feel like Yeah, he's seen Sconsin's. He seemed, that's why I picked him. There's a lot of, you know, I was thinking about maybe like um anyone else. Yeah. Um, all right. Amazon original shows. John Krasinski of Jack Ryan, also the office. He's in these. I was like, people know him from the office. Or Rachel Brushannon of Marvelous Miss Masil. These are their two Emmy Wayne shows. That's why I picked him. Uh I have no idea. Let's go with the girl who I don't really know. Rachel Brushannon, who plays the title character in the Marvelous Mrs. Masel, was born in Milwaukee. Really? She has been nominated for the enemy for and Emmy for best actress in a comedy series three times, taking it home in 2018. And it's a great show. It's really funny.
SPEAKER_01I need to see. I know I want to watch the show, but I'm looking at her picture, sorry.
SPEAKER_00Next, The Terminator. Oh no. Arnold Schwarzenegger, aka The Terminator, the titular character. Or Linda Hamilton. Sarah Connor, who he has to go back and save. I have no idea who that is.
SPEAKER_01Uh Sarah Connor. Because he's Sarah Connor. Well, Linda Hamilton's the actress.
SPEAKER_00Oh, sorry. Linda Hamilton. Actually, no. Arnold Schwarzenegger, while he's an Austrian-born person, he went to college in Wisconsin. And he guesses which college? Uh Madison? When he was 31, he started school at the University of Wisconsin Superior. Superior. I was like, no, it's somewhere. According to a Los Angeles Times article, he accepted a position as a quote unquote cooperating faculty member. Oh, come on. He was already like known as Mr. World and all this at the time. So residency requirements could be waived and he could complete his classwork largely from Los Angeles, but he was a faculty member at Wisconsin Superior. Doesn't he live in California? He earned an undergraduate degree in business administration in 1979 from UW Superior, according to the Wisconsin Alumni Association's website.
SPEAKER_01Why did he pick UW Superior? Like what is you live in California where there's I don't even know how many schools?
SPEAKER_00Evidently is the only school that was chill enough to be like, yeah, we'll give you some. Yeah, cool, man. Whatever you want.
SPEAKER_01We have 25 students. That's fine.
SPEAKER_00And finally, because I couldn't help myself Star Wars actors. Mark Hamill, Luke Skywalker himself, or Harrison Ford. Sexy Han Solo in the world.
SPEAKER_01I feel like Mark Hamill has a tie here.
SPEAKER_00Wrong! Four out of six, that wasn't bad. Okay. Iconic actor Harrison Ford, known for his roles as Indiana Jones, Han Solo, Rick Deckard in Blade Runner, and many more attended Ripon College. Ripping where he majored in philosophy.
SPEAKER_01But why again? Why Rippin'?
SPEAKER_00Well, Ripon's actually a really well thought-of school. Uh also the home of Boy State. I went there as a crap hole. And uh world's biggest speeding trap is the town before it. Like you get off of 41 at Fond du Lac, and it's two towns, and it's the world's biggest speed trap. I got a ticket there. Um, it's yeah, there's it's uh I can't remember the town, but um another uh who's the famous comedian from here? I almost put on this list.
SPEAKER_01I don't know.
SPEAKER_00Um anyway, he did a bit about how terrible this town is well known for that. Anyway.
SPEAKER_01Oh, the Manitok Minute guy?
SPEAKER_00No, well, Charlie Barron's did a bit about it. Like anybody that's like from up north has got a speeding ticket in this town. It's not bad. We all know it's a speed trap, and they write 36 and the 35 tickets. Oh, really? Yeah, they get like not anyway. Uh so though uh Han Solo didn't end up graduating from Rippin, he took his first acting class in Rippin, got his first professional acting gig in Williams Bay. What? Yep. Doing what? The Belfry. Oh, really? And married his first wife in Mekwan.
SPEAKER_01Oh, I'm uh so amazed by this. Who's the guy? Isn't the guy from Monk? Yeah, Tony Shaloub. Okay, so that's the whole one. He almost was on the list too. Okay, he was the only one I think. Mark Ruffalo. Oh, yeah, yeah. The whole I do like Mark Ruffalo. I can't find this map, but I my map won't load. I really need to know what town is this. Oh, yeah, I'll find it. Not that I'm ever gonna go to Rip in Wisconsin if I'm gonna be.
SPEAKER_00I got it changed to a parking on the wrong side of the road ticket, paid my $250 and moved on.
SPEAKER_01$250?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and this was like 15, oh god, no, 20 years ago. How much was your speeding ticket? It I was going, so it's one of these like ridiculous 55, 45, 35, 25s in the span of a hundred feet. Oh, that's enough. Going down a hill. Yeah. Rosendale.
SPEAKER_01Oh, I've never heard of Rosendale.
SPEAKER_00Yep, it's the worst. It is the worst.
SPEAKER_01Wow. Um Rippin is where the first Marcus, like the Marcus Corporation, where their first movie theater was. I have been there and seen that when I worked for them.
SPEAKER_00Let's see. And they're uh Wikipedia, they're very clear. Uh about the speed trap on the Wikipedia page.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it's the worst. It's the worst. Um I'm dying to understand about this food.
SPEAKER_00Okay, so usually we talk about the best food of the day of the week, and I, you know, talk about these cool things I did.
SPEAKER_01I'm like, ah Brad, it's not that hard, you can do it. Yeah, just you know, spend four hours doing this.
SPEAKER_00So last Saturday, Sunday, Friday, one of these days, Sunday, um, Sarah wanted Italian stuffed shells. So you're stuff, you know, your big shell pasta, and then you do like um, you know, some stuff and stuff it in there. That's how you do it. They're a pain in the butt to make because you have to make the stuffing, you have to cook everything, and then you have to bake them, and like it's a pain in the butt to stuff, but it's like not a big deal. It's like one of her favorite meals. I'm happy to do it. But it's also her little brother's one of his favorite meals. So I'm like, I would rather do it when you could both be here and make both of you happy.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Uh so we didn't do that, but I'm like, oh, you know, you really want this. How about I try something new? Like, how about I make ravioli from scratch? Oh, yeah, that's the same. So well, it's the same. It's a feeling and you know, and it's like so. I made pasta for the first time. I frantically texted Nick, our kitchen guy, who is my dough guy. He is a dough guy. Uh, incredible at dough and baking and all things. And he's uh maybe a bigger, oh yeah, it's easy to cook this than I am. Yeah, but I truly believe some of his stuff is easy to cook.
SPEAKER_01Not homemade pasta. No idiot thinks homemade pasta is easy to make.
SPEAKER_00There's a lot of people who are like, oh, let's make the homemade pasta stuff in the country. Really? Oh yeah. Okay. So many people.
SPEAKER_01Dummies.
SPEAKER_00So I made my first batch of pasta. Everybody told me uh Nick was very encouraging, but other people told me it's stupid. Um and uh it didn't go great.
SPEAKER_01Wait, I thought it did go well. Maybe you said you're saving the story for the pod. That's the story I was told. Okay, it was like it didn't go great. Tell me about it.
SPEAKER_00So first you have to roll it super thin. I don't have a pasta machine.
SPEAKER_02Oh.
SPEAKER_00So I hand rolled it for like 40 effing minutes. And it was supposed to be so thin you can read a newspaper through it. Well, I didn't have a newspaper, but I had the back of the special flower bag that I purchased for this. Oh. And I could read it. So I'm like, okay, I think this is thin enough. Well, evidently that's a you know, like darker print than uh a newspaper. Oh, that's funny. So the ravioli was too thick, so it was a little chewy. It was good as just like pasta, like you know, big long strips of that was good.
SPEAKER_01Oh, so you made it thin thin pasta and ravioli?
SPEAKER_00Well, so the stuff I had, you know, because you had to square off the sheet and stuff. So I didn't want to waste the dough, so I just boiled that up as a regular pasta. Okay. Uh and I had a good tomato sauce. The tomato sauce I put on it was very good. So it was delicious that way. The feeling I made was great for stuffed shells, but it was too watery and thin for these. So like trying to get the whole consistency right was bad. The first batch I made were like looked like dumplings and were horrifically bad. I love dumplings. Um the second batch were passable, but not good. Like could have just bought ravioli. Not good, but I'm gonna try again because failure is not an option. Are you gonna buy an attachment I'm no? I'm just gonna get a pasta press. Because you're like 30. Yeah, I do. Oh, you do, but you're gonna be able to do that. But the attachment's like $200. Oh, are they really? Yeah, so I'm just gonna buy a manual press.
SPEAKER_01Oh god, you're done.
SPEAKER_00I'm gonna try it again.
SPEAKER_01Okay, man.
SPEAKER_00So my ravioli sucked.
SPEAKER_01What'd you end up eating then?
SPEAKER_00Uh we made regular person noodles to go with Bridget makes it homemade. To go with the pasta sauce that I had. That was homemade, so you know. Oh, that's easy.
SPEAKER_01That's easy. Just like making noodles. Um I failed. This is nice to hear because yes, Nick is always telling us how easy things are. I'm here to tell you about leftovers that Nick said looked delicious.
SPEAKER_00I actually I meant to ask you, what did you toss that salad in? Because it's delicious, like there was some vinegar in it.
SPEAKER_01So there was no vinegar, definitely no vinegar. So um, you know, I love to take our Santa Fe chicken and just like shred it, and then it feeds us for like 800 days. And uh, but I'm really bad at using leftovers in a different way. It's like I made this for tacos. I will eat tacos again. Like, so I was looking in my fridge for lunch the other day, and I'm like, oh, I have an entire thing of chicken that like is gonna get nasty eventually. And I don't have tortilla chips. Like, why don't I be healthier and put it on a salad? So I've got a big bowl of lettuce, got, you know, puts my Santa Fe chicken on it. What else do I want? My dressing, if you will, was a combination of guacamole, sriracha, and a little bit of ranch for cream range. It was so good. And so it was just lettuce, Santa Fe chicken, those three delicious dressing types, we'll say, and some cheese. And like if you have tortilla strips, it would be great in a wrap, but I was saving the calories from a tortilla. Like, I don't need that crap in my life. Really helped, can you tell? Um, but I want a little crunch. That was the only thing I needed was like tortilla strips or chips crumbly. Fritos. I didn't have any, like, we just like Fritos at the store.
SPEAKER_00There's a bag of expired Fritos you could have grabbed.
SPEAKER_01Dang, Fritos would have been good. Yeah, I'm a walking taco person.
SPEAKER_00Oh, me too. I love them.
SPEAKER_01I proceeded to then have that salad for like two or three days for lunch because that's what I do.
SPEAKER_00It looked delicious.
SPEAKER_01It was great. I felt relatively good about myself. Um, and there we go. Leftovers.
SPEAKER_00Well, that brings us to time for Kid Corner.
SPEAKER_01It's time. It's time. Um I have a sad one. Yeah, I know. I was like, why don't you go first? Because it's sad.
SPEAKER_00So this is our like Simona's been very healthy, very, very good. Uh and she took a little wipe out when she was at daycare yesterday, running to see her teacher. Uh her teacher's last day when we were recording this, and it's very sad.
SPEAKER_01And so she's Except she's mostly in Lucy's class anyway.
SPEAKER_00So she's very, she was, you know, very happy to see her Miss Katie again. And she was running and just wiped the F out. I wasn't there to see it, but Sarah explained it that she wiped out hard. Um, seemed fine, got up, you know, but she was fine. Kids wipe out all the time. Well, all the time. Sarah picks her up, and Miss Katie says, like, hey, she's been limping pretty bad. She doesn't seem like she's in pain, but she's and she played hard all day, but she's limping. Comes out to our pop-up pub and she's like, looks like her hips out of the sock. It's like the only way. Like she's got like a gate.
SPEAKER_01Like a gate. It is like a gate.
SPEAKER_00Like rolling as she's walking, like a somebody's legs longer than the other one.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Um, and luckily, our friend Aaron, who does this thing type of thing of like you broke a bone? What do you call that? Orthopedics.
SPEAKER_02Orthopedics.
SPEAKER_00Uh she was there and she's like, there's nothing that feels out of place. Let me like check with some other people. Aaron gave us the all-clear. We're like, okay, this morning it was like even maybe more pronounced. Oh, really? And so we're freaking out. We're like, we trust Aaron. This is like literally a great specialist doctor in this field. She's our friend. She would tell us.
SPEAKER_01And but you're still freaking golfing it. This is your first like real.
SPEAKER_00And like she really, I mean, like, if this is something where like she's gonna have this, like she's two, and like you don't want one fall at age two to be something that is for the rest of her life, like, hey, it's like your ankle thing. Yeah, fuck.
SPEAKER_01Where like you don't day after events, it still hurts.
SPEAKER_00You don't want your kid to be like, hey, because my parents didn't go and you know, like I have a lifelong thing where I can't run right.
SPEAKER_01Really?
SPEAKER_00So I Oh, you're saying with her. I was like, wait, you do? No, so like I'm just I'm worried about it.
SPEAKER_01Did you call someone or what are you doing? Because it's almost the weekend. You guys are gonna be playing back all weekend.
SPEAKER_00I know. Well, and like it's Friday, so we're not even gonna get in and they're gonna go to urgent care. Well, that's worthless.
SPEAKER_01But you can make it.
SPEAKER_00So we're like very much in on the like, let's wait and see. Like I don't think it's urgent. Yeah, because we could always maybe it's Aaron lives right down the road.
SPEAKER_01Honestly, it's could probably like chiropractic. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00So we'll see, we'll see, we'll see. It's okay. Maybe she'll just work it out. You know, the doctor's like, it's nothing's gonna show up on scans because she's so little. So it's scary. I'm scared.
SPEAKER_01I mean, it could have been a head injury. How's that for perspective?
SPEAKER_00She could have been decapitated, but she's just limping.
SPEAKER_01She'll be fine. She'll be fine. Rub some dirt on it. She's a parent of two kids. I'm like, she'll be fine. She'll be fine. Um, that is sad. She did I did notice her limp yesterday before you told me this. And I was like, maybe she's I just thought like she was walking in a lumpy field, so it was, you know, awkward. Well, uh, I believe I've talked about this on the podcast before, but I'm here to maybe ask for parenting advice. So sometime early in Lucy's life, we were like struggling, not early, at the age when it gets annoying to change a kid's diaper, we like we're struggling with changing her diaper. Like, what are we gonna do? So somewhere, somehow, we were like, hey, Lucy, we gotta change your stinky booty. And like she thought it was funny and she laughed a lot and whatever. We're well past that. Like, we're in the potty training phase, but still, right now, to get her to like change her pull-up, we have to be like, Lucy, you want to do stinky booty? And Elliot thinks it's funny to join him. Sounds like a dance. It has become a dance. Dude, the stinky booty she looks like a stripper. Like, so we take the don't get mad at me, people. She takes her pull-up off, and then whichever parent is changing her, she likes to run naked to the other parent and stick her butt out. And like, if she's by a couch, she'll like put her hands on the couch and be like, stinky booty, and you guys can't see me. But it straight up looks I'm like, you need to stop this. And will this stop when you're out of photos? Like we we're both kind of like shit, like this has gone a little too far. But hopefully, when she's out of pull-ups, it stops.
SPEAKER_00You know, it feels like it's what they say, you know, if you're if you're digging China and you get halfway there, just keep digging.
SPEAKER_01I mean, we are just and hope you come out on the other side. We're hoping like when she gets underwear, it stops, but I don't know. So help. What do I do? That's not where I thought the story was going. No, well, also, you do think it was gonna be a poop story? I did. Would have been good. No, we don't have exciting poop stories because she's still constipated all the time. Oh, poor Lou. Yeah, so you know, butts poop.
SPEAKER_00Uh let us know about stinky booties and if any of your children have graduated out of their stripping faces.
SPEAKER_01Um, also about a soda stream. Yeah, let us know. And what was your other advice question? Apple watches. Apple. I feel strongly about that. Um we need a lot of help from you guys this week. Ralph Loren? Ralph, don't tell us about that. Um You can tell us at black and tan or half and half. Hello at dinnerplustdrinks.com. Don't yell at us. Thanks. We appreciate it.
